Democratic
Party Headquarters Opens Early
with Record Number of Volunteers;
Open House on Thursday, August 19 at 6:00 p.m.
August 11, 2004 (Lexington, NC) – The Davidson County Democratic
Party has opened its Headquarters at 101 S. Main Street in Lexington
and will hold an Open House on Thursday, August 19, 2004 from 6:00
– 7:00 p.m. The monthly meeting of the Democratic Women of
Davidson County will follow at 7:00 p.m.
The
Democratic Party opened the Headquarter earlier than usual this
year in response to excitement over the Kerry/Edwards ticket and
a renewed interest from county residents in the local Democratic
Party. “More than 40 people have volunteered to staff the
Headquarters already, and we’ve only been open about a week,”
says Randall Lanier, chair of the Davidson County Democratic Party.
“It is wonderful to see so much interest not only in the Kerry/Edwards
ticket, but also in our three candidates for county commissioner—Alton
Futrell, Loretta Martin, and Charles Mode,” says Lanier.
The
Headquarters is currently open from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesdays
and 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. on Fridays. In September, it will also
be open from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays. As the election
draws near, additional hours will be added. The Headquarters will
also be open during special events in Uptown Lexington, such as
this Friday night’s “Summer Night Stroll.”
Democratic
Party supporters can pick up free campaign materials, such as yard
signs and bumper stickers, for state and local candidates. A small
donation is requested for Kerry/Edwards and general Democratic Party
merchandise, which the local party purchased. Bumper stickers available
at the Headquarters include a few that will appeal to Republicans
and former GOP members, such as “Bush Made Me a Democrat”
and “Republicans for Kerry.”
“We
are enthusiastic about the upcoming election - locally, statewide,
and nationally - and we encourage folks to come by and pick up information
about the candidates and party
activities in our area,” says Joan Brinson Dressler, president
of the Democratic Women of Davidson County, which is coordinating
Headquarters activities. “I appreciate the hard work of Kivi
Leroux Miller, Julee Cunningham, and Elizabeth Cunningham in setting
up the Headquarters, and special thanks to Aurelia Smith and Julia
Strader for coordinating our volunteers,” says Dressler.
Anyone
interested in volunteering at the Headquarters or other Democratic
Party events can complete the volunteer sign-up form at www.DavidsonCountyDemocrats.org,
stop by the Headquarters, or leave a voicemail message at 224-6149.
