Democratic Party Headquarters Open House This Thursday
We
have opened the Democratic Party Headquarters earlier than usual
this year in response to excitement over the Kerry/Edwards ticket
and a renewed interest from county residents in the local Democratic
Party. Our Headquarters is at 101 S. Main Street in Lexington, across
the street from J. Edwards. Please plan to stop by our Open House
this Thursday, August 19, from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. The regular monthly
meeting of the Democratic Women will take place there at 7:00 p.m.
We've
got all kinds of campaign materials including bumper stickers, buttons,
and yard signs for many of the local and state candidates, as well
as Kerry-Edwards, with more materials coming in all the time. We
also have some great Democratic Party bumper stickers and buttons,
including a couple that will make great gifts for your Republican
friends who no longer support Bush-Cheney ("Republicans for
Kerry" and "Bush Made Me a Democrat").
Our
regular office hours are Wednesdays from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. and Fridays
from Noon - 2:00 p.m. In September, we will expand our hours to
include 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays, as well as more hours
during the week.
Special
thanks to the Democratic Women for setting up and managing Headquarters.
If you'd like to volunteer to work at the Headquarters, you can
complete the form on our website, stop by when the office is open,
or call our HQ Volunteer Coordinator Aurelia Smith at 249-9795.

Don't Forget to Vote in Tuesday's Run-Off
Democrats
need to vote in the run-off for Superintendent of Public Instruction
tomorrow, Tuesday, August 17, 2004. The candidates are June Atkinson
( www.june4schools.com) and Marshall Stewart ( www.stewartforstudents.org).
The Dispatch reported that it will cost the County $40,000 to conduct
this run-off, so let's get our tax dollars worth and vote!

Want to Work on Voter Registration and Outreach? Join Us Tuesday
Night
The
Davidson County Democratic Party's Voter Outreach Committee will
meet on Tuesday, August 17, at 7:00 p.m. at the Headquarters (101
S. Main St. in Lexington). The committee will be finalizing its
schedule of voter registration events and organizing its Get-Out-the-Vote
(GOTV) efforts for the upcoming election. All party members are
welcome to attend. For more information, contact committee chairman
Edgar Miller at 249-2043 or edgarmiller@earthlink.net.

Yellow Dog Democrat T-Shirts Now Available
The
Democratic Women of Davidson County are selling Yellow Dog Democrat
T-shirts. They come in two styles, Modern Dog and Scruffy Dog, and
are available in M-L-XL and in red, navy, white, and grey. Get yours
for $15 at Headquarters or at the Shrimperoo. These shirts are a
must-have for Davidson County Democrats and because they aren't
dated to this election season, you can wear them for years!
What's
a Yellow Dog Democrat, you ask? Yellow Dog Democrats are voters
who are loyal to the Democratic Party. The term was first used in
1928 when a Democratic Senator from Alabama backed the Republican
candidate for President. His fellow Southern Democrats were disgusted
that he had crossed party lines, and the saying, "I'd vote
for a yellow dog if he ran on the Democratic ticket" was born.
Today, a Yellow Dog Democrat is a proud Southern Democrat.

30, at Jack's Seafood Restaurant in Welcome. Tickets are $30 and

you want your lucky number, call soon!
By
participating in Democratic Party fundraisers like this, you help
us raise money for the voter education and outreach programs that
can make a big difference on Election Day.
7. Two New Groups: NC Veterans for Kerry-Edwards and The
MOB (Mothers Opposing Bush)
We
want to let you know about two groups that are actively seeking
members in Davidson County. Neither group is Democratic per se,
but they both support the Kerry-Edwards ticket.
NC
Veterans for Kerry/Edwards is a statewide organization where veterans
are joining together in a single aim: to make John Kerry our next
President. Men, women, old, young, Republicans, Democrats and independents,
all members of NC Veterans for Kerry share the belief that America
needs qualified, trustworthy leadership--and that John Kerry is
the candidate who will provide it. The group has a major rally planned
for 2:00 p.m., August 28, at Rowan Park in Fayetteville. For more
information or to join, visit www.ncveteransforkerry.org.
You can also sign up at our local Headquarters.
The
MOB (Mothers Opposing Bush) is a national group of mothers and others
who oppose George W. Bush because his administration's policies
endanger our families and our country. MOB's mission is to get the
facts out, get the voters out, and get this administration out of
office. Kivi Miller has signed up as the Sister City leader for
Lexington/Davidson County and invites all mothers and others to
join the MOB! For more information or to join, visit www.mob.org.
We also have MOB materials at our local Headquarters.
