Writing
Letters to the Editor
You
can help build community support for Democratic values and candidates
by writing letters to the editors of our local papers.
Here
are a few general tips on writing letters to the editor:
- If
you are writing in response to an article in the paper, send your
reply within 24 hours.
- Letters
to the editor don't have to be rebuttals or comments on articles.
Comment on what's going on in your community and how Democrats
are helping the situation.
- Write
about good news, not just bad news.
- If
the paper is covering the issues or candidates you support in
a favorable way, thank the editor in a letter.
- Keep
your letter short and to the point. Under 250 words is best.
- If
you want to write something longer, like 500-800 words, ask if
the paper is interested in an op-ed piece. These articles summarize
an issue, develop an argument and propose a solution.
- Include
your name, address, and telephone number in your letter. Some
newspapers verify authorship before printing letters.
