| President
Bush's Failed Record
The
Economy & Jobs
George
Bush has been a disaster for jobs -- despite having
his entire economic plan passed in the last three years. On
Bush's watch America has lost 1.6 million private-sector jobs,
making him the president to lose jobs since Herbert Hoover.
War
in Iraq
George
Bush went to war with no plan to win the peace. As
a result, American troops make up nearly 90 percent of the
coalition and have suffered nearly 90 percent of the casualties.
Education
George
Bush failed to provide the promised resources necessary for
schools to meet the requirements of the No Child Left Behind
Act, underfunding his own law by $27 billion. As a result,
Bush is punishing schools instead of rewarding them.
The
Environment
Bush
is letting corporate polluters that have financed his political
career and their lobbyists literally write the laws and
regulations that govern our air, water and land. Bush’s
regulations to let polluters dump more toxic mercury into
the environment were taken directly from memos written by
industry lobbyists.
Social
Security/Medicare
George
Bush broke his promise to protect the social security
trust fund. Instead, he used that money to bankroll his tax
cuts for the wealthiest Americans.
Health
Care
Under
George Bush, families are paying 50 percent more for their
health care. Medical expenses have risen at four
times the rate of wage and Bush has no plan to reverse these
trends.
Since Bush took office, 5 million Americans have lost their
health insurance. Today, one in seven (45 million) Americans
have no health coverage.
Taxes
& the Deficit
Under
George Bush, America has gone from a record surplus of $236
billion in 2000 to a projected record deficit of $422 billion
in 2004 -- the largest fiscal deterioration in America's
history. When George Bush came into office, the nonpartisan
Congressional Budget Office projected a 10-year surplus of
$5.6 trillion. Today the CBO projects a 10-year deficit of
$2.7 trillion.
Energy
George
Bush's energy policy is a complete failure. Time
and again Bush has put the interests of energy industry over
the interests of American consumers. Bush has taken millions
of dollars in campaign contributions from oil companies, electric
utilities and the nuclear industry. Bush and Cheney's energy
task force took the recommendations of industry lobbyists
and made them the basis for their national energy policy.
Homeland
Security
Despite
his tough talk, President Bush's efforts against terrorism
have fallen far short of what is necessary to meet this threat.
We are not safer and President Bush still has no comprehensive
or long-term strategy for victory. The Bush administration
has done too little to adapt our armed forces to the new missions
they have to undertake. This administration has left our military
stretched too thin.
